Director of Strategy and Innovation

At HOPE International, we describe strategy as a plan for coordinated action, and we describe innovation as the pursuit of something new that will improve impact. Strategy and innovation are not viewed as centralized functions, but as disciplines being practiced at every level throughout the network. The director of strategy and innovation leads the team responsible for equipping and empowering staff to design and manage effective strategy and to confidently steward innovation opportunities that will further the mission of HOPE International. They are responsible for clarifying vision for the strategy and innovation disciplines through the creation of shared frameworks, language, and standards. They align expectations in the innovation and strategy disciplines by developing suggested processes, identifying key stakeholders, and mapping out the roles and responsibilities for each stakeholder. They resource staff to set & manage strategy and pursue innovation with excellence through the discovery, development, and curation of best practices, training key stakeholders in those practices, and modeling best practices in the initiatives they support.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Promote and fulfill the mission and vision of HOPE International.

Leadership
Manage the central service unit (CSU) strategy and innovation team.
Ensure a personal, healthy spiritual balance within family, work, and church life through the adoption of biblical personal and spiritual disciplines.
Encourage, lead, and disciple staff in a manner that leads to increased connectivity with the mission of HOPE International.

Clarify vision for the strategy and innovation disciplines
Work with CSU and field leadership to clarify HOPE’s definition and approach to strategy design, strategy management, and innovation.
Serve on the advisory council for HOPE International’s “Innovation” strategic objective, which seeks to listen and respond to those we serve.

Align expectations and resource staff for strategy design & management and innovation
Design and maintain recommended processes, tools, and resources for strategy design, strategy management, and innovation that can be consistently applied throughout the organization.
Work with program and department leaders to contextualize the process to their specific requirements, including embedding elements into the appropriate workflows.
Collaborate with other support service teams (e.g., Spiritual Integration, Listening, Monitoring & Evaluation, Partnership, Technical Assistance, Finance, and HR) to synchronize support of key network initiatives.
Create opportunities for learning and sharing best practices through trainings and communities of practice.

Model best practices through internal consulting
Provide consultative support to leaders around the network as they seek to design and manage effective strategies.
Provide consultative support to idea generators, project leaders, and decision makers as they seek to identify, explore, evaluate, and implement innovative solutions.
Facilitate and support effective design thinking and innovative approaches to projects and initiatives throughout the organization as needed.

Facilitate design and management of network strategy
Collaborate with the director of strategic initiatives to facilitate the design of the network strategic planning process, working closely with the executive team to ensure clear communication throughout each planning phase.
Oversee the network-level management of network strategy through facilitating cadences of accountability, and collaborating with teams across departments to ensure clarity in guidance and reporting on objectives and key results.

External Relationships
Liaise with and coordinate with external resources (such as professors, design strategists, students, and others) to advise on, review, and evaluate strategies.
Participate in conferences, workshops, and related events to learn from and contribute to sound practices in the field.

General
Research, learn from, and stay current in the fields of microfinance, development, and innovation.
Travel to the countries where HOPE operates.

QUALIFICATIONS
Personal confession of Christian faith and commitment to the mission and vision of HOPE International.
10+ years of related professional experience with 5+ years of leadership & management experience.
International travel experience in difficult contexts required and experience living abroad preferred (requires willingness and ability to travel up to 50 nights per year, mostly international trips to visit HOPE programs).
Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate team members of a global organization.
Demonstrated ability to create and manage systems and to think strategically.
Excellent organizational skills, including effective time management and prioritization of competing demands and multiple deadlines
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to conduct business analysis and prepare synthesis recommendations as needed.
Excellent cross cultural and cross departmental listening and communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to build consensus, cast vision, and work collaboratively and effectively with other executives, board members, employees at all levels, and volunteers.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite products; experience with Miro and Wrike a plus.
